Focusing Levels 2-4

LEVEL 2-4 TRAINING : INTO THE FLOW

Level 1 is like training wheels.  With Levels 2-4, we get even better at riding any terrain that life presents us with.   No matter what your level of Focusing skill is when you begin these trainings, the door is now open to a sense of more empowerment.  In ever-flowing layers, here we come to understand that we are always changing and evolving and Focusing is that essence from which we feel flow and thriving in our lives.  More often we consciously understand how to bring ourselves back to what feels open, alive and flowing anytime we do not feel that way either inside ourselves or with what is going on in the world around us.    These workshops can also be designed in alternate formats.  Currently, our most popular format is to gather in groups that meet every 2 weeks 6-7 times for 2 hrs. This gives us time to fit training into our busy lives, provides a structure for us to continue practicing, helps us bond with the Focusers in our group and gives the subtleties of this process time to work.  Fee Range for each 6-8 session Level:  $150-240.

LEVEL 2 is about deepening into the Focusing and Listening process by looking more at the role of the Companion. A companion to ourselves as well as others. We learn lead-ins. Then, wherever your process is now, this course nurtures your next step. Our ability to be larger than our emotions or challenges gets stronger. Our understanding of what it is like to stand on the edge of something new gains clarity. Practice with others in the class opens up our process to even more ways of communicating with us.

The structure of the class for Level 2 is very similar to Level 1. We continue our emphasis on Empowered Focuser, Relaxed Companion and on deepening our understanding of this state of being we call Presence from which all the rest of Focusing unfolds.

LEVEL 3 is called the Guide’s Journey. My Favorite Level when I did my initial training! Here we learn the typical ‘shape’ of a Focusing session, so we know what stage the process is in and what reminder would be most helpful. We dip deeper into our understanding of body as process by exploring it as a dance of neurobiology and physiology. This expands our sense of Presence in an experiential way we notice in our daily life. We learn here to be aware of and bigger than, our inner process alongside something that has learned to help us with the stages of process. We’ll discover more ways to bring Focusing into our daily life as we learn invitations here which very much adapt to our everyday relationships. There is a lot of new information in this level. By extending the class over a period of months, we’ll give ourselves space and time to integrate this information at a deep level. There are no assistants in this class. I hope that each of you will sometime volunteer to participate as either Focuser or Companion in a Demo. In addition to the six classes, I have added an additional 30 min with me individually to this level. This gives us an opportunity to really check in around process.

If you are a healing professional or have opportunities to support others (kids, clients, friends, etc!!) as they process a life situation, the guiding tools of Level 3 and one’s growing ability to understand every relational encounter as somewhere ‘in process’, are invaluable skills. This is also a great level to consider repeating sometime.

And… last with the idea that we spiral here happily ever after, I’ve designed LEVEL 4 to be my NEW VERY favorite Level! One I imagine would invite us back every so often as a way to reground in the principles of Focusing.

LEVEL 4 is called The Center of the Maze. Our goal here is to return to the essence of Focusing and ourselves as living process. What does it really mean when something within us moves forward? We’ll have more support for embodiment practices and noticing how does this inner process transpire outward and change how we experience and live in the world. We’ll gain clarity around these two normal states of being: Presence and Partiality and how they affect our experiencing. What is it to be a healing space for ourselves.

We’ll delve deeper into the principle of the Radical Acceptance of Everything and look at how it applies to distractions, images, sensations outside the middle body, physical symptoms & more. We’ll look closer at the inner criticizing process, it’s reactors and exiles.

We will explore our edges with TAE and get a feel for Gendlin’s philosophy by crossing his three types of theories with neuroscience concepts. We’ll glimpse more understanding of our natural divisions of left-right hemispheres and top-bottom brain contributors into our daily experience of life. We’ll play with body movement and shared Presence as offered by Wholebody Focusers. And so much more…

Here are Level 4 general class topics:

Class 1: Focusing as a Way to Grow; Sensitive Empathic Listening goes a Long Way.

Class 2: Presence and Partiality: I AM a Healing Space

Class 3: Inner Criticizing Process and It’s Reactors, Intro to TAE – Thinking at the Edge

Class 4: Thinking at the Edge: Crossing as a Way to Explore Edges

Class 5: Holding it ALL with Stopped Processes and Tangles

Class 5: Focusing Unites Brain and Body; Neuroscience

Class 6: Wholebody Focusing, Exploring Body, Movement, Gestures and Beyond Body, Transforming Trauma, Shared Presence

Class 7: A New Sense of Self in Living Life as Process

We’ll meet approx. every 2 or 3 weeks for 2 hrs a total of 8 times or for about 3-4 months. Our first hour will be checking in and exploring our topics. Our 2nd hr will revolve around a demonstration in class with process appreciations from all those observing. Unlike Levels 1-3, there is no partner practice during class unless you are in the Demo. Class will be limited to 8 – 10 participants and designed so that each person will get an opportunity to be Focuser for a class demonstration.

Reading involves completing Ann & Barbara’s Inner Relationship Focusing Student Manual part two. There are also a variety of articles provided and some handouts that I have created. The reading is relatively deep, the type that reveals something new for us from year to year. Other than the Student Manual, it is your choice how much of the reading to complete. Often students repeat this class again a few years later and find they get it all that much more. Focusing encourages us to explore that new edge and there is plenty of new emerging in this field to choose from. Thus, each group that comes together will create a somewhat different experience as we re-ground in a deeper level of trust in ourselves, our current experience and that it’s all going somewhere life-thriving.

If you have a regular Focusing partner, you are welcome to Focus with them throughout this class. If not, I will suggest partners either from this class or our greater community. To get the most out of this class, I do ask that you Focus with a partner regularly (weekly) beginning one month before we start and throughout the time this class meets.

2020 CLASSES ARE HERE!

For 2020, there may be a few new spots available in the Level 3 Tuesday evening Zoom class starting in October. The fall Level 2 classes will probably fill from my spring/summer classes, however, feel free to check in with me. The Level 4 classes I offer this year will be full with people who have been in these previous classes. It’s best to contact me in advance if you are interested in any particular level as I can keep you updated and involve you in choosing schedules. If these fees are difficult for you, I do offer options to pay over time and often have a low income spot available. Please reach out and contact me about your situation.

For LEVEL 4:

I ask that participants are Focusing weekly with a partner at least one month before class begins and throughout our time together. This is to ensure you have Focusing time to explore the many concepts we cover in class experientially. Even then, we cover so much here, that often people come back and repeat this level. Level 4 is a great place to return to whenever you would like to go deeper with your process from wherever it is. Limited to 8 – 10 participants.

HOW FOCUSING CLASSES WORK

There will be lectures, demonstrations, question periods, group exercises, and paired exercises. You will be paired to practice a Focusing exercise with another participant each class session. There will also be an additional paired homework exercise between sessions that will take approximately 45 min. Even with local classes, this additional exercise is usually done over the phone.  Please plan to attend all 6 or 8 sessions for the full time of the meeting. Missing one or two classes is acceptable.  If you miss more than two classes, it is often best to repeat the Level.

For the videoconference class, all you need is a computer with a camera. You can also attend via a cellphone. You’ll be able to see everyone in the class, generally, whoever is speaking appears larger at the time. You can mute and turn off your video camera as needed.  Recordings may be available if you miss a class.  Video seminars work amazingly well. Hope to see you here!
